|Events||War of 2016|
The Earth Space Defense Moon Base was a military base located on Earth's Moon. Designed with both offensive and defensive capabilities, the ESD Moon Base was the first of several planetary bases designed to monitor the Solar System for potential alien threats.
The ESD Moon Base served as a space monitoring center, but is also equipped with both offensive and defensive weapons. The primary weapon was the moon cannon, which was based on the central weapon of the City Destroyers, and was recently installed in 2016. Along with the Orbital Defense System, it was one of Earth's first line of defense.
After great efforts and technological innovations (most of which obtained through the use of alien technology retrieved from the destroyed City Destroyers), the ESD Moon Base became operational on February 21, 2009. During the inauguration ceremony, ESD Director David Levinson participated in the honor of the ribbon cutting ceremony. The commander of the base was Jiang Lao.
During the 20th anniversary of the War of 1996, the Moon Base destroyed the Sphere's spaceship that appeared near the Moon. However, the Sphere, which was trying to warn humanity about the Harvesters' return, survived. Following afterward, the base came under attack by the Harvester Mothership, and was immediately destroyed with all personnel lost, including Commander Jiang Lao.
Behind the ScenesEdit
- In The Art and Making of Independence Day: Resurgence, the design for the moon base is inspired by previous notions and ideas for the colonization of the moon. The moon base's cannon, according to concept artist Johannes Mücke, is approximately as big as "Trump Tower, in diameter."
