The space tug, also known as the moon tug is a specialized shuttle built, developed, and used by the Earth Space Defense before and during the War of 2016. Space tugs were used in the transport and construction of material brought to humanity's off-world colonies such as the Moon.
Overview[]
The space tug resembles to a giant frog, with nearly spherical main hulls flanked by long jointed legs. The legs were used as crane arms while in flight, to catch and hold whatever objects the tug was hauling, and turn back into legs when the tug lands.[1] The spacecraft is heavily armored and have at least two crew members; one pilot and the load operator who uses the arms to transport and maneuver their load.
The space tug's anti-gravity generators in the engine housing would tend to give off a lot of waste heat when pushed to their limits.[1]
History[]
Space tugs were used in the construction of the energy cannon on the ESD Moon Base. Tug pilot Jake Morrison participated in the construction and single-handedly prevented the cannon from falling onto the base by forcing his tug to push back the cannon back into its place.
During the War of 2016 a space tug was used by Thomas Whitmore to destroy the Queen's ship. The tug was loaded with cold fusion bombs and transmitting an signal that made the Harvester Queen believe the tug had the Sphere on board. Whitmore was able to fly the tug inside the Queen's ship and destroy it. However, the Queen herself survived.

- In The Art and Making of Independence Day: Resurgence, the space tug is described by the production crew as a "space forklift." Due to being a centerpiece in Resurgence, Roland Emmerich, the concept artists, and builders spent their time and efforts getting its look and movement correct.
