The Mare Tranquilitatis (Latin for "Sea of Tranquility") is a lunar mare that sits within the Tranquillitatis basin on the Moon. It is one of the many "lunar lakes" on the moon that is made out of basalt. On Earth the "lakes" can be seen as dark spots on the moon, and in older ages people thought these were real "seas".

History[]

The mare was the landing site for Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins in July 20, 1969. Armstrong became the first man to ever set foot on the Moon and named the site Tranquility Base.

In July 2, 1996, an alien mothership passed over Tranquility Base, in which its disturbance destroyed the never-changing footprints of the Apollo 11 astronauts.

Behind the scenes[]

  • In reality, the Apollo lunar plaques were mounted to the descent stage of Lunar Module, and was not placed on the lunar surface as depicted in the film. The exception is the Apollo 13 plaque, which came back to Earth.
  • The United States flag placed on the moon by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin is no longer standing. It was knocked over by Armstrong's and Aldrin's take off in the Lunar Module. Furthermore, the flag and other flags left on the Moon are bleached white with no color, due to UV rays and massively direct sunlight.
