The United Nations (UN) is an organization to promote international co-operation which was established on 24 October 1945 after World War II in order to prevent another such conflict from occurring again in human history. The organization's aims is to maintaining international peace, promoting human rights, fostering social and economic development.

The UN Headquarters was destroyed when the aliens destroyed New York City during the first phase of the War of 1996.[1] Prior to the first wave, the UN General Assembly met in emergency session to debate the alien arrival. When the Secretary General proposed a one world government, many of the delegates accused him of being in league with the visitors. The entire assembly then promptly stormed out, effectively suspending the UN. Following the July 4th victory, the United Nations deployed peacekeeping forces in mopping up surviving alien forces, such as in Russia.[2]

After the invasion, the UN became even more influential following the unity shown by the human race against the alien invaders, and created the Earth Space Defense program to prevent future extraterrestrial threats.
